What is a Confirmation of Enrollment and Why Do You Need One?
A CoE is a document issued to a student by an education provider to verify their enrollment in a specified course. It provides evidence that you are eligible to enroll in a University and have accepted your offer to study with that education provider. A CoE is mandatory when lodging your student visa application. The Australian Government uses it as a copy of the information about your study plans in Australia.
If you plan to study in Australia on a student visa, you will need an accurate CoE at all times.
An eCoE is an electric copy of the CoE sent to you via email, whereas a conditional CoE is dependent on your final results (this is for students already enrolled on a course).
What Information Does a CoE Have?
It contains your:
- CoE code
- Provider
- Course level
- Course start date and end date
- Deposit fee
- Total tuition fee
You can see how the CoE looks like here.
When is the CoE Issued?
Once you are accepted to a program, the school sends you a Letter of Offer. The offer can be unconditional, conditional or package offer.
You have to meet the offer conditions before you can accept and sign your offer. There are three general categories of conditions- academic, English, and certification. If you have met all of them and agree with the terms of the offer, you will have to sign it – make sure you read it carefully. Your LOO requires that you pay your fee deposit, your Overseas Student Health Cover fee or any non-tuition fee required. Once everything is ready, you submit the proof and signed LOO to the school, and if they are satisfied they’ll issue the CoE to you via email of your agent.
Your offer may include a requirement to complete a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Questionnaire. You must ensure that it is completed in full to avoid delays to your GTE assessment. When completing the questionnaire, you must address all of the questions in detail, honestly and truthfully and provide any documentary evidence to support your application.
Cancellation of CoE
Your CoE can be cancelled by the University for several reasons. You should make sure that you read the LOO in detail and contact your school to know what you need to do for your CoE to remain valid.
Note, however, that the schools understand that sometimes students can’t complete their degree in the time listed on their CoE. In such cases, extensions may be granted. You might be able to get extra time to complete your course if you have been sick, you have had to deal with a family emergency, or if your academic progress has been unsatisfactory. Be sure to explain your situation to the school in advance.
In case you have any problems with your CoE, you can contact the school you are applying to or your visa agent to help you sort it out.
